TOUR WITH A THEME
This remote trail follows the traditional trade route between the people of Spiti, Changthang and Tibet. It begins in the high altitude meadows of Kibber, the breeding ground of the famous Spiti horses and also called the Snow Leopard country. The trail descends the Kibber gorge and then climbs over to Gete Village. Across the pass, the trail follows a broad valley till the Spiti River. It brings one to an almost incredible change of scenery as we walk. |

Itinerary
D1:
Group will be received at the International airport in New Delhi. Transfer to hotel.
D2:
Departure to Manali (2040m) by taxi/private deluxe bus. A spectacular drive through the lower ranges of the Himalayas to the beautiful valley of Kullu. Transfer to hotel in Manali.
D3:
Time to acclimatize, sight seeing in around Manali and natural hot sulphur bath at Vashisht 2.5 kms from Manali.
D4: Manali - Batal (4030m)
By bus/taxi 3 hours drive to Rohtang Pass (3978m), which is the gateway to Lahaul & Spiti, Pangi and Zanskar. 16 kms below the pass is a small hamlet of Gramphu. A dusty and boulder strewn path along the left bank for 17 kms then on the right bank of the Chandra River leads towards the small hamlet of Batal. Opposite the river you get a wonderful view of the Bara-Shigri glacier and the C.B. peaks. O/N Camp.
D5: Batal - Chandratal (4270m) (Moon lake)
We start our trek from Batal. A very long gradual ascent to Chandratal, walking along the base of Kunzum Pass (4551 kms). Panoramic view of glaciers and the towering peak of Mould-la. Camp near the lake, which is the source of Chandra River.
D6: Chandratal - Kunzum Pass (4551m) - Losar (4079m)
Gradual ascent to the Kunzum Pass (4551m), which is the gateway to Spiti Valley. Spiti Valley is 160 kms in length, north to south. Walk down to the plateau following a stream. Camping site 3 kms before the first village of Spiti: Losar (beautiful village on the right bank of the Spiti river).
D7: Losar - Kiato
Follow the trail until you reach the first bridge, cross it and after a short distance cross another bridge on the Spiti River and walk along the left bank. The small village of Hanse, monastery can be visited. Finally arrive at Kiato.
D8: Kiato - Kibber (4205m)
(The highest permanently inhabited village in the world). Follow the left bank; a small stream has to be crossed and then a gradual ascent takes us on to the ridge. Walk down to the Ladarcha grounds - a place for traditional trade fares in ancient times. Finally come to Kibber Village, which is the highest and permanently inhabited village in the world. Visit Kibber monastery. O/N Camp.
D9: Kibber - Ki Monastery - Kibber
Trek down to visit Ki Monastery, which is the biggest and largest in Spiti Valley having 260 young and old monks receiving religious teachings. Ki has a number of rare paintings, scriptures and scrolls. Return back to Kibber. O/N Camp.
D10: Kibber - Langza
Gradual ascent through a small plateau and alpine pasture. A short distance beyond Gete Village (4400m) climb up for 1 hour, en route you get to see some fossils. Spiti is a living museum for geologists. Step down to the Shilla River, cross it and ascend towards Langza village. Watch out for the beautiful view of Shilla Peak. Camp near the village. Visit the Langza monastery situated above.
D11: Langza - Kumik. Langza, Hikkim and Kumik
These three villages are situated at an altitude of 4400m - 4600m. Favourite route-ways for those looking for fossils. Easy going up to Hikkim and a horizontal walk to Kumik. Visit Tangyut monastery situated above Kumik. The ruins of the Tangyut monastery can be seen near Hikkim. In 1975 an earthquake had destroyed the monastery. O/N camp near the village.
D12 :
Kumik - Dumal. Gradual ascent to Kaugme. Further trail leads you to Dumal situated on the Lingti Valley. Look at the beautiful view of Lingti Valley, which is 60 kms long to north. O/N stay at Dumal.
D13: Dumal - Lalung
Steep zigzag descent until reaching a small bridge, cross the bridge and walk along the right bank of Lingti River. Cross a bridge on the Lingti River and then walk for an hour through a dry gorge to Lalung village. Visit the ancient Sherkhang monastery, which is 1000 years old. Camp near the monastery.
D14: Lalung - Dhankar - Dhankar Lake
Easy walking towards Dhankar monastery through alpine meadows. Visit Queen's palace and Dhankar monastery. Dhankar traditionally was the old capital of Spiti Valley. However monastery, it is older than Tabo Monastery. 120 young and old monks receive religious training. 45 minutes of gradual ascent towards the Dhankar Lake. O/N Camp near the lake.
D15: Lalung - Dhankar - Dhankar Lake
Descending gradually to Sichchiling village on the left bank of the Spiti river. From here we go by bus/taxi to visit Tabo monastery, which is 1000 years old. Built in 996 AD by Rinchen Zangpo. This Monastery is also known as the Ajanta of the Himalayas. Sherlang, Duang, Domlang Gompas are next to Tholong Monastery in Tibet which is considered of great importance. This beautiful 10th century Monastery has a large number of scriptures, pieces of arts, wall paintings, thankas and stucco figures. Tabo is the oldest and archeologically the most important monastery in Spiti. Drive back to Attargo, where Pin River meets the Spiti River. A 20 km unmettled road takes you to the Pin Valley, known as the land of Ibex and Snow Leopard! O/N Camp near the Pin River.
D16: Kungri - Kaza
Visit the Kungri Monastery before leaving for Kaza, sub-headquarters of Spiti Valley. Check into a guesthouse.
D17: Kaza - Manali (2040m)
We drive by taxi/bus to Manali over the Kunzum Pass 4551m and Rohtang Pass 3978m.
D18:
Full day rest at Manali.
D19:
Departure to Delhi by flight from Bhuntar. Transfer to hotel.
